SANCTUARY PROJECT

“A portfolio of riso prints made as part of a collaborative project between illustration students of Lviv National Academy of Arts in Ukraine, Cardiff School of Art & Design and Printhaus. The images are a personal response to the word ’sanctuary’. Ideas emerged from online group discussions about the feeling of sanctuary and how that is experienced within the context of war. The theme of nature as a haven runs through much of the work, escaping into the woods and rivers whether in memory, imagination or reality. However, in one of the most poignant images, an abandoned bedroom that was once a sanctuary is now invaded by neighbouring trees. The subway is a safe space, so is the comfort of music and familiar domestic tasks. Many of images celebrate the joy that can be found in the midst of hardship.”
